Digitalization of Cultural Heritage / DOCH

Raum 7 (TBA)

09:00 - 18:00

Donnerstag, 26.09.2024

Armed conflicts and wars, natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods as well as air pollution, and the traces of time endanger cultural heritage. While digitalization of cultural heritage cannot preserve it physically, it can leave enough information to prevent its complete loss and is thus an important tool for research and the repair and reconstruction of tangible goods. Advances in computer graphics and rendering, as well as virtual and augmented reality, do not only improve the quality of the information but increasingly allow people to experience cultural heritage without the need for physical presence. It thus also allows us to transcend time and let people experience a place in the past. Computer scientists, architects, and archeologists from universities in Germany, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, and Sudan are cooperating to foster and implement teaching digitalization of cultural heritage using project-based education in a DAAD funded project. A first student academy took place in 2023 with student projects concentrating on the digitalization of places of historical interest in Germany as well as in Jordan. The upcoming hybrid workshop aims to promote the relevance of the topic and bring together people from different fields and countries to enable common research and projects.
